Personal Case Study
Reality Revised Run (feat. Comedian/Actor, Ronnie Reed)
In 2015, I embarked on an audacious journey, (as MAZEMENT,) with the release of ‘Reality Revised,’ a mixtape that was satirical, with ambitious commentary wrapped in the beats of hip hop. This project was a bold mockery of society, laced with humor and an unapologetic edge that would become a hallmark of my style as MAZEMENT.
‘Reality Revised’ was not just a collection of tracks. It was a narrative, a comedic hip hop album with a sharp wit that took jabs at contemporary country music while celebrating the everyday grind with anthems like ‘Ratchet Rich’ featuring the legendary DJ Rob Swift. Each song was a story, a moment of truth delivered with a beat, a melody, and a punchline.
With a modest budget but limitless ambition, I set off on a ‘Run’—a compact tour that was more personal, more intense, and more interactive than the standard tour template. The ‘Run’ took Comedian, Ronnie Reed and I through the heart of New York City and to Rhode Island, with each performance offering a unique blend of intimacy and spectacle. These weren’t just shows; they were gatherings, places where fans became friends and visa versa, music met laughter, and I shared the mixtape from start to finish.
Each night began with the comedic prowess of Ronnie Reed, whose stand-up set the tone for the evening. Then, I would take the stage, the mixtape flowing like a live narrative, with conversations between tracks that drew the audience into MAZEMENT’s world. It was a campaign that didn’t just play music but played with the fabric of performance, weaving in stand-up, audience interaction, and live hip hop into a single tapestry.
The impact? A 25% increase in social media followers, a significant bump in music streams, and invaluable new connections. But beyond the numbers, it was the relationships forged, the fans who became part of my journey, and the affirmation that hip hop, at its best, is a dialogue, a shared experience between artist and audience.
